OpenAI released GPT 4.5

OpenAI released GPT 4.5, calling it their largest, top-performing chatbot yet.

OpenAI released GPT-4.5 on Thursday the research preview of GPT-4.5, a general-purpose large language model. It will initially be open to software developers and people with ChatGPT Pro subscriptions.

OpenAI said in a blog post, The model presents inaccurate information less frequently than predecessors.

OpenAI wrote, “Early testing shows that interacting with GPT‑4.5 feels more natural. Its broader knowledge base, improved ability to follow user intent, and greater ‘EQ’ make it useful for tasks like improving writing, programming and solving practical problems,”. GPT-4.5 demonstrated a lower hallucination rate than OpenAI’s GPT-4o and o1 models in one test, the company said in a report accompanying Thursday’s release.

OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman said in a Thursday X post, At the same time, the new model won’t be the state of the art in benchmarks, describing the model as having “a magic to it i haven’t felt before.”

The release nevertheless represents progress for one of the most highly prized startups in the world. Last month CNBC reported that OpenAI was in discussions on a $40 billion funding round at a $340 billion valuation.

With over 400 million weekly active users, OpenAI intends to bring GPT-4.5 to those with ChatGPT Plus and Team subscriptions next week, the company’s research lead, Alex Paino, a member of the company’s technical staff, said on a livestream.

Paino said, ChatGPT Edu and Enterprise subscribers will gain access the following week.

In a Thursday X post, Sam Altman described GPT-4.5 as a “massive, costly model,” noting OpenAI’s intent to release it simultaneously to Plus and Pro subscribers. However, rapid growth has led to a GPU shortage, delaying the rollout. Altman added that tens of thousands of GPUs will be added next week, enabling the model’s deployment to the Plus tier shortly after.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed on X that GPT-4.5 is now accessible in preview via Microsoft’s Azure AI Foundry. With over $13 billion invested in OpenAI, Microsoft has deeply integrated the startup’s models into its ecosystem and supports OpenAI with critical computing power.

The launch follows a turbulent month for the AI sector, as markets grappled with the efficient strategy of China’s DeepSeek lab. The ripple effects hit Nvidia hard, with its market cap dropping nearly $600 billion in a single day, underscoring the high stakes in the AI chip race.

Two weeks later, Altman wrote in an X post that the company wants to get better at sharing a roadmap publicly.

Sam Altman announced that GPT-4.5 is on the horizon, with GPT-5 to follow, incorporating a broader range of OpenAI’s technological advancements. The company has also introduced reasoning models that perform extensive computations in real-time as users submit their questions. In contrast, GPT-4.5 will mark OpenAI’s final model without chain-of-thought capabilities.
